Definiteness in a language without article. A study on Polish
Most standard Slavic languages do not exhibit a definite article, in contrast to, for example, the Germanic languages. The question then arises how do the articlesless Slavic languages express the semantic category of definiteness? In my dissertation I will focus on the West Slavic language Polish, which is said to be an articleless language. The first goal is the analysis of the various definiteness strategies in Polish such as information structure, aspect, demonstratives, possession, and case alternation. The investigation of these definiteness strategies will be done on the basis of Löbner’s (1985, 2011) approach to definiteness and his distinction of concept types into sortal, relational, individual, and functional. It will be interesting to see whether the four concept types are treated differently in these strategies.
